Dr. Michael Robertson is an expert in drug and alcohol-related matters with over 20 years experience both nationally and internationally.  Dr. Robertson completed his Batchelor of Science with honours in pharmacology and toxicology at Monash University and then his doctoral studies at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) Monash University, before completing his post-doctoral fellowship at National Medical Services in the USA.  He is currently the Director and Senior Clinical & Forensic Toxicologist and chemist at Independent Forensic Consulting (IFC).

He is one of only a few independent, fully-trained and qualified clinical and forensic toxicologist’s practicing in Australia.  Dr. Robertson has been involved in some of the most complicated national and international cases and is a leading National expert in hair testing and routinely provides expertise in drug, alcohol, chemical and poison related matters associated with:

  • Criminal Law (including drug facilitated sexual assault; DUI and DUID; cause or contribution to death; drug possession and matters of legal status of drugs including the evaluation of Synthetic Cannabis and Synthetic Stimulants e.g. ‘Bath Salts’ and issues associated with analogue provisions)
  • Family Law (including the interpretation of urine, drug and hair testing; Liver Function Tests (LFT), Carbohydrate Deficient Transferrin (CDT) and Ethyl Glucuronide (EtG) testing and result interpretation)
  • Personal Injury, Medical Negligence, CTP, Insurance claims
  • Workplace Accidents (involving the cause and contribution of drugs and alcohol to an incident); together with matters including exposure to chemicals and other poisonsWorkplace and Industrial Disputes (drug test interpretation and disputed results; unfair dismissals; urine v oral fluid disputes)

Dr. Robertson testifies regularly throughout Australia and has appeared in most States and Territories throughout Australia.

As a clinical toxicologist Dr. Robertson provides independent advice to a range of national drug testing companies and other private, government and union organisations relating to issues that include:

The strengths and weakness of urine and oral fluid testing strategiesInterpretation of laboratory results of blood, oral fluid, and urine drug findingsEvaluation and/or recommending urine, oral fluid, drug and alcohol testing regimes, policies and / or testing procedures to ensure compliance to AS/NZS 4308:2008 and / or AS4760-2006.

Provides independent expertise in compliant alcohol and drug testing policies and procedures including compliance to AS/NZS 4308:2008 and AS4760-2006.

Facilitates and provides advice on policy development together with the pros and cons of urine and oral fluid testing;Facilitates formal and informal negotiations relating to urine and oral fluid testing policies, procedures and compliance with the current Australian Standards. Provides education and awareness to private and public organisations on the strengths and weaknesses of different testing regimes i.e. urine vs. oral fluid.

As a qualified Trainer in drug and alcohol testing, Dr. Robertson performs training and qualifies collectors in accordance with the current Australian Standards for breath alcohol, urine and oral fluid collection and drug detection. Trains in collection procedures together with the operation and application of breath testing devices; the operation and application of urine drug testing devices and the operation and application of oral fluids collection devices to ensure compliance with AS/NZS 4308:2008 and AS4760-2006.
